Last year two of my running pals and friends talked about doing a marathon. I told them they were CRAZY, there was no way I'd ever do a marathon, who WANTS to run 26 miles....and then I before I knew it I was signed up to do it with them. I'm not new to running by any means, I started after I had my son but then really got into it after I had my daughter. Even though I was signed up I still wasn't super excited, lol but I knew if I didn't do it now when I could train with my friends that I would never do it. I hadn't really been running a lot over the summer since my half marathon that I ran, just a mile here and there at the gym to warm up. But as it got closer and closer to time for me to start my training and I wrote my training schedule down in my planner I got more and more excited.
Now rewind back to 7 weeks ago I was doing my first long run outside. It was cold, it was wet, and it was still a little snowy out. I did my 10 miles and felt great! I was so proud of myself for getting out there and hitting the pavement despite the less than perfect conditions. The next day I was a little sore which isn't anything new I mean something is always hurting. My shins were sore from my run which I figured was from my semi new running shoes. Shin splints were nothing new to me and in the past I've always been able to push though and they've gone away. So I kept running, and running, and running, until 2 weeks ago when I just couldn't run anymore! The pain was just too much to take anymore and at mile 6 of my 12 mile run I called it quits and came home.
I finally decided maybe it was time to hit up the doctors office just to make sure I hadn't done something worse than a shin splint. He told me no running for 1 to 2 weeks and told me I should start going to physical therapy. I was feeling pretty down yesterday headed into my physical therapy appointment. I've not been running for a week and a half now and my leg isn't feeling any better. I had tried a lot of things to help my leg before I decided to go to the doc and start pt. I'd tried icing, rolling, time off, I was taking way too much ibuprofen.... I didn't get the greatest news at the visit. No running for up to an additional 4 weeks on top of the time I've already taken off. I have a pronation and I need to strengthen the arch in my foot and the muscles in my leg. Not the news that I wanted but she assured me that since I'm not new to running that I should be able to miss this time and still do the marathon. The only excercise I'm able to do is no-impact and all the stretches that she gave me to do. For now until I'm more pain free (right now it hurts constantly) I'll be going twice a week.
